Travel Insurance – Myths and Tips

Guest Blog Written by Chelsea Capwell

WHY SHOULD A FAMILY CONSIDER TRAVEL INSURANCE?

You’ve done your research and planned an amazing trip, but sometimes the unexpected can happen. That’s where travel insurance comes in!

Travel insurance is more important than ever as it protects your investment of time and money spent planning your trip, but many travelers don’t fully understand what plan or coverage would be best for them. Travel insurance can offer coverage for delays, cancellation, loss, injury, emergency medical, and much more. Did you know some plans ensure children at no additional cost if they travel with adults? If the unthinkable happens, travel insurance can help with the expense. Without it, you risk being left with hefty medical bills or losing all the money you spent on your trip.

Protecting yourself and your family should not be a hassle. There are many options and extensive information on individual policies out there. It can take a good amount of time to go through each one and you may be left overwhelmed and confused. TravelInsuranceMaster.com, a user-friendly site that recommends a specific plan based on your trip, will help you easily request a quote, compare plans, and purchase the best travel insurance for you and your family.

DEBUNKING MYTHS ABOUT TRAVEL INSURANCE

Travel insurance is not just for international trips. Traveling domestically, flights can still be delayed and canceled, and accidents can still happen too!

Travel insurance can also provide the protection you need for a rental car! Check off the Rental Car benefit filter on TravelInsuranceMaster.com to find a plan without the added cost of purchasing expensive coverage at the rental car agency, or using your own personal auto insurance.

Many travelers don’t realize their regular health insurance most likely provides very limited or no coverage while abroad. Travel medical plans can fill that gap. Comprehensive plans that combine travel medical plans with trip cancellation options are the most common travel insurance choice.

In fact, if you plan to travel internationally, many countries are currently requiring some form of medical travel insurance coverage for visa entry.

Don’t rely on your credit card travel insurance. Your credit card may only offer minimal travel benefits to protect you from lost luggage or delays. A travel insurance plan offers broader coverage so you’ll be able to travel with peace of mind with benefits like trip cancellation and emergency medical coverage.

The travel industry is heavily regulated so Travel Insurance Master cannot alter plans or pricing on their website.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

One of the biggest questions is when should you purchase travel insurance?

The best time to buy travel insurance is within 10 – 21 days (depending on the insurance company) of making your first deposit on your trip!
There are also time-sensitive benefits that make purchasing insurance early worthwhile. One of these benefits is the Pre-existing Medical Conditions waiver that many travelers look for. If you buy insurance within the stated timeframe from the initial deposit, usually 2 weeks, you will get broader coverage like the Pre-existing Medical Conditions waiver and more, depending on the specific plan.

If you or someone you are buying insurance for has a pre-existing health condition, you should seriously consider the likelihood of it flaring up or reoccurring before or during your trip. Could it cancel or interrupt your travels? For plans without the Pre-existing Medical Conditions Waiver, normally a medical condition present prior to your travel insurance policy’s effective date would not be covered.  Most plans have a look-back period which means the plan investigates your medical history, anywhere from 2 to 18 months, to check if your condition appeared or was treated during that time.

Comprehensive plans with a Pre-existing Medical Conditions Waiver will give you coverage if you buy your plan the same day or within a set number of days after your first trip deposit. The good news is it usually doesn’t add to the cost of your plan! As always, be sure to read the plan document for full details on coverage.

Trip Cancellation plans cover non-refundable prepaid trip costs if certain requirements are met. If you’re looking for the Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) benefit, you will normally need to buy insurance within 1-21 days of the initial deposit, depending on the specific plan.

The earlier you buy insurance after booking your trip the better. You can buy insurance even if you have not paid for your trip in full yet. However, plans do allow you to buy coverage up until the day before you leave.

One of the other biggest questions is the difference between Trip Cancellation and Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR).

The Cancel for Any Reason benefit is offered as part of some comprehensive insurance plans and gives travelers extra protection and flexibility. CFAR allows travelers to cancel for any reason whatsoever as long as they are canceling within the stated timeframe, usually 2 days before their trip. Travelers with CFAR will receive up to a 75% reimbursement of their otherwise non-refundable prepaid trip costs.

Trip Cancellation plans only allow for cancellation if certain requirements are met. There are many covered reasons for trip cancellation including sudden sickness, injury preventing you from taking a trip, the death of a family member, or natural disaster affecting your home or destination. If a traveler was to become ill with COVID-19 before or during their travels, it would be covered either under the Trip Cancellation or Emergency Medical Claim. Trip Cancellation gives you the ability to receive reimbursement for 100% of your otherwise non-refundable prepaid trip cost. Be sure to read the description of coverage and understand the requirements you will need to meet like a proof for cancellation.
